Dr Purandara Bekal Kunkangar

Dr. Purandara’s core areas of research and expertise include groundwater exploration, artificial recharge, hydrogeological monitoring and modeling, flow modelling, seawater intrusion studies, river rejuvenation, water management plans for Industries (particularly for sugar industries, pollution studies, mining hydrology), river bank filtration and EIA processes.

Dr. Purandara Bekal K, a Former Scientist `G’, of National Institute of Hydrology, India  which is a premier R & D organization under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Govt of India, New Delhi, with its Head Quarters at Roorkee, Uttarakhand. He obtained his Master’s degree in Marine Geology (1981-1983) with FIRST RANK from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). Obtained Ph. D from CUSAT in the year 1990-91 in the area of Coastal Hydrology, Sedimentation and Geochemistry.

Dr. Purandra acquired MBA Degree in Environmental Management from NIBM, Chennai. Completed more than twenty sponsored projects, which includes UNESCO, UNDP, FORD Foundation, DST, MoES and World Bank aided projects (Hydrology Project) and consultancy projects from various government and non-government organizations. Worked in collaboration with UNESCO, Paris and New Delhi during 1995-2006 in the area of Hydrology. Visited countries - USA, Australia and Malaysia and obtained advanced training in the area of Hydrology and Watershed Management.

Selected for the UNESCO Fellowship to Visit New Zealand (Training on surface water Modeling) and also to Germany for River Bank Filtration Project as a part of MoU between India and respective countries).

He is accredited by NABET as Technical Area Expert (Hydrogeology) for Mineral Exploration.

Received Service Excellence AWARD 2021 & 2022 from MEAI, Hyderabad during the year 2022.

In the year 2000, received BEST SCIENTIST award from the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) which was instituted by then Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India (presently known as Jalashakti Ministry).

Also received VEENA ROONWAL Award, 2015 instituted by Mining Engineers Association of India, Hyderabad for the contribution to Water Management in Mining areas. Acted as a Member of Climate Cell, NIH, Roorkee and Expert member of District Environmental Committee for Mining Approvals. Published more than Two hundred research articles in various International and National Journals, National and International Proceedings and Edited Book chapters.

He is the Team Leader of the Geo Marine team engaged in Ground water studies of North Qatar basin aimed at delineation of fresh water zones, , ground water modelling and strategy for artificial recharge of ground water  in North Qatar basin. This national project is sponsored by the Qatar Water and Municipal Authority, Doha.
