M. Balakrishnan was with Geological Survey of India from 1986 to 2016 and retired as Director (Geophysics). He obtained M.Sc. in Physics from Vikram University, Ujjain, India.
Earlier part of his carrier worked as Jr. Geophysicist in Kerala Govt. ground water Department.
Later joined GSI and served for 30 years in Geophysical Exploration as Geophysicist. Under taken various geotechnical work involving seismic, resistivity and logging. Conducted mineral exploration, geophysical mapping with Gravity and magnetic surveys. Involved in airborne geophysical surveys viz; magnetic, spectrometric and electromagnetic surveys. Associated in offshore studies by magnetic and seismic reflection techniques. Fabricated an alternative seismic signal source with an adjustable impact energy source for ground geophysical surveys. Presently involved in R&D work for fabrication of Solar Seismograph.

Dr. Krishna is a marine biologist with 35 years of experience in Environmental Science, with an emphasis on marine environments. During 1986-2008, he worked as Senior Scientist and Principal Scientist in the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, at Karwar, Mangalore, Veraval and Kochi. Later in April 2008 he joined in the Center for Environment and Marine Studies, Research Institute, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and worked as Research Scientist (Professor) for 11 years.
He worked as project manager and lead technical expert on several client-funded projects in Saudi Arabia (Middle East) and India, related to environmental and biodiversity studies for Government and Corporate Bodies. He is having experience in the management and delivery of multidisciplinary environmental projects for terrestrial, coastal and marine environment, across a range of sectors, including coastal manufacturing and utilities, offshore oil and gas, dredging and land reclamation, and major infrastructure. He has teaching and student guiding experience at Masters and PhD levels, and successfully guided three (3) students to get PhD degree in marine sciences from the Mangalore University, Karnataka (India).
Dr. Krishna has international experience as a member of the Roster of Experts established by the GEF-UNEP, consultant for Asian Development Bank, and Board Member of the Society for Conservation Biology- Asia (SCB-Asia). He has published around 75 scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals and authored 12 book chapters. He is a member of the journal editorial board, review editor, and peer reviewer of several international journals.
